checklist

Acalypha inaequilatera CardielThis checklist includes about 1600 names of Acalypha and other genera considered synonym. The initial compilation was based on Index Kewensis, and subsequently crosschecked, corrected and enlarged with entries from databases in the International Plants Name Index (IPNI) and Tropicos of Missouri Botanical Garden, as well as with the checklist of the Euphorbiaceae prepared by Govaerts, Frodin & Radcliffe-Smith in 2000. In addition, it includes any other new name or combination that we could find in the most recent literature.

In order to designate a taxon as accepted or as a synonym we follow, as a rule, to Govaerts et al. (2000) criteria for non-american taxa, unless new information is available in more recent publications. For American taxa, we base our decision on our previous publications. Whenever possible, we indicate the bibliographic source where the status of each name is validated.

For every accepted name, the “distribution” heading lists the countries where the taxon is found or, when this information is not available, the continental regions. The main source for such information is also the work of Govaerts et al. (2000) in non-american taxa, and our own research for American ones. The geographic information is not comprehensive and will be updated as our knowledge of the genus is improved.

In most cases, the information about the nomenclatural types has been obtained from the original publications.
